In 1916, the composer Gustav Holst took a young conductor, Adrian Boult, on a long walk through Kew Gardens and Richmond Park in London. A few years earlier, Boult had written to Holst asking whether he had composed any music for small orchestra that he could perform. Few were better equipped than they were to introduce Boult to the score; as rehearsal pianists, amanuenses, copyists and performers, the two would be intimately involved in the creation of “The Planets,” one of the most popular orchestral pieces of the 20th century. Documents from Lasker’s archive at the Royal College of Music in London show that this way of introducing “The Planets” to other artists wasn’t so unusual in its genesis. In an introduction to the piece given by Lasker on BBC radio in 1951, she said, “We had the great joy of introducing the work to all the great conductors in this country, and, after the war, to many of the great continental conductors.”

LONDON (AP) — A lawyer for Prince Harry on Tuesday challenged the U.K. government’s decision to strip him of his security detail after he gave up his status as a working member of the royal family and moved to the United States. Harry, whose wife is biracial, cited what he said were racist attitudes and unbearable intrusions of the British media in his decision to leave the United Kingdom. Eadie also said there was a cost factor, because security funds aren’t unlimited. Harry said the committee unfairly nixed his security request without hearing from him personally and didn't disclose the panel’s composition, which he later learned included royal family staff. The case is one of five that Harry has pending in the High Court.

Oamenii de știință anunță apropierea unui dezastru ecologic. Un raport global întocmit de experți conservaționiști, citat de publicația britanică The Gardian, arată că două din cinci plante sunt amenințate cu dispariția, ca rezultat al distrugerii mediului lor. Noul raport arată un ritm accelerat de distrugere a plantelor și ciupercilor, baza ecosistemului terestru. Este foarte posibil însă, a recunoscut Lughadha, ca numărul real al plantelor pierdute pe vecie să fie cu mult mai mare. Dispariția plantelor are drept cauza distrugerea mediului lor, prin defrișarea pădurilor și transformarea lor în teren arabil, prin ocuparea zonelor sălbatice cu ferme, prin introducerea de specii invazive și prin poluare.
